Madaripur is a river district south of the Padma, crossed by the Arial Khan, Kumar and Palong rivers. It takes its name from the 15th-century Sufi saint Shah Madar, whose dargah is a place of pilgrimage. Visitors also come for the Raja Ram Temple at Khalia, the Madaripur Museum, the large Shokuni Lake in town and the Charmuguria eco-park. About 1.29 million people live in its roughly 1,125 km² (2022 census).
