Jamalpur lies about 140 km north of Dhaka between the Jamuna, which forms its western edge, and the Old Brahmaputra, with the Indian state of Meghalaya to the north-east. Bahadurabad ghat was once a famous rail-ferry crossing of the Jamuna. The district is known for nakshi kantha, the embroidered quilts of rural Bengal, and for farming, with a sugar mill and the Jamuna fertilizer factory. About 2.50 million people live in roughly 2,115 km² (2022 census).
