About Char Kukri-Mukri

Char Kukri-Mukri is an island at the mouth of the Meghna in Charfasson upazila of Bhola, about 130 km from Barishal. Part of it is a wildlife sanctuary, much of which is flooded twice a day by the tide and covered in dense mangrove forest planted by the Forest Department, cut through by six small creeks.

People first settled on the island around 1930. The 1970 Bhola cyclone swept away its entire population; settlers returned in 1973–74 to fish and farm, and the mangroves were planted after that.
