About Kuakata Beach

Kuakata is a beach town in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali, about 320 km south of Dhaka. Its sandy beach stretches about 18 km, and it is one of the few places in the region where you can watch both sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal from the same shore.

The name comes from kua, Bengali for "well": Rakhine settlers who arrived from Arakan in the late 18th century dug wells here for drinking water, and an old well still stands near the Seema Buddhist temple in the Rakhine village of Keranipara. Nearby are the Fatrar Char mangrove forest, the Gangamati forest and the large fishing port at Alipur–Mohipur. Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims gather here for the Rash Purnima and Maghi Purnima festivals.
