Cox's Bazar district guideA long sandy beach on the Bay of Bengal, known for sunsets and seaside walks. It is in Cox's Bazar district, Chattogram Division.
Cox's Bazar Beach runs for about 120 km along the Bay of Bengal and is often called the longest natural sea beach in Asia. It is the most visited tourist destination in Bangladesh. The sand is unusually wide: around 200 m at high tide and about 400 m at low tide. Quicksand can form during ebb tide, so it is wise to stay near the busy, patrolled stretches.
The town takes its name from Captain Hiram Cox, an East India Company officer who resettled Arakanese refugees here and died in 1799; a market founded in his memory became Cox's Bazar. The best-known parts of the beach are Kolatoli and Sugandha Points, close to the town's hotels, restaurants and the Burmese Market.
