Cox's Bazar district guideA small island in the Bay of Bengal, off the Teknaf peninsula. It is in Cox's Bazar district, Chattogram Division.
Saint Martin's Island is Bangladesh's only coral island and the southernmost part of the country. It lies in the north-eastern Bay of Bengal about 9 km south of the tip of the Teknaf peninsula, and covers only about 3 km². A smaller islet, Chhera Dwip, is cut off from it at high tide. Locally it is also called Narkel Dweep, "Coconut Island", and Daruchini Dweep, "Cinnamon Island".
About 3,700 people live here, mostly from fishing, rice and coconuts. Surveys in 2010 recorded dozens of coral species and hundreds of species of fish, seaweed and molluscs, and the surrounding sea was declared a Marine Protected Area in 2022. Visitor access has been restricted in recent seasons to protect the island, so check the current rules before planning a trip.
