Faridpur sits south-west of Dhaka on the Padma, whose wide channel forms its north-eastern edge. The district has long been a trading centre for jute and hilsa, and it is the birthplace of the medieval poet Alaol. Its heritage includes the Pathrail Mosque in Bhanga, the Mathurapur Deul tower in Madhukhali and the Satoir Mosque in Boalmari. About 2.16 million people live in its roughly 2,053 km² (2022 census).
