About Mathurapur Deul

Mathurapur Deul is a tall brick temple tower in Mathurapur village, Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur. It is thought to date from the 16th century, though some place it in the 17th, and in 2014 the Department of Archaeology listed it as a protected heritage site.

Who built it is uncertain. One account credits Sangram Singh, a general who became powerful after collecting revenue for the area following the death of the Bhusna zamindar Satrajit in 1636 and settled in Mathurapur. Another says Raja Man Singh, Akbar's general, raised it as a victory tower after defeating King Pratapaditya; neither story has been confirmed.
