About Mir Mosharraf Hossain Memorial

Mir Mosharraf Hossain (1847–1911), one of the finest prose writers in the Bengali language, was born in Lahinipara village in Kumarkhali, Kushtia, and is remembered here at the memorial in his name. He is best known for Bishad Sindhu (1885–91), a novel about the tragedy of Karbala, published in English in 2016 as Ocean of Sorrow.

He also wrote the play Jamidar Darpan (1873), the novel Ratnavati and the autobiography Amar Jiboni. He studied at Kushtia School and Krishnanagar Collegiate School and is regarded as the first major writer to emerge from the Shia community of Bengal.
