Kusumba Mosque

A Sultanate-era stone mosque on the Atrai river, built in 1558–59. It is in Naogaon district, Rajshahi Division.

About Kusumba Mosque

Kusumba Mosque stands in Kusumba village, Manda upazila of Naogaon. An inscription dates it to 1558–59, in the time of the last Afghan Suri rulers of Bengal, and it was built under the supervision of an official named Sulaiman. Although built in the Suri period, it follows the local Bengali mosque style rather than north Indian designs, and it later inspired mosques in Bangladesh and Myanmar.

The mosque is nicknamed Kala Pahar, "black mountain", or the "black gem"; the names may come from its survival of the 1897 earthquake, which destroyed most of its enclosure wall and damaged the domes, or from the black plaster once on that wall. It has never been fully restored, though the Department of Archaeology has repaired some domes, and it is a protected monument.
