Naogaon district guideRuins of an ancient Buddhist monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is in Naogaon district, Rajshahi Division.
Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur in Naogaon district is one of the best-known Buddhist monasteries of the Indian subcontinent and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Seals found during excavation link it to the Pala king Dharmapala, who reigned in the late 8th and early 9th centuries. It was one of the great monastic universities of its era, alongside Nalanda and Vikramashila.
The huge square courtyard was ringed by monks' cells, with a tall cross-shaped temple in the middle whose terraced walls are decorated with terracotta plaques. Scholars from as far as Tibet studied here between the 9th and 12th centuries, and the monk Atisha is associated with it. The vihara declined from the late 12th century; a site museum displays finds from the excavations.
