Mujibnagar, formerly Baidyanathtala, is in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur district. On 17 April 1971 the Provisional Government of Bangladesh, formed a week earlier to lead the Liberation War, was sworn in here, and the place was renamed Mujibnagar in honour of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, then imprisoned in Pakistan. The government in exile itself operated from Calcutta.
A memorial complex of about 20 acres now stands on the site where the first ministers took their oath, with a monument and grounds commemorating the event.
