The Lalon Akhra at Cheuriya, about 2 km from Kushtia railway station, was founded by Lalon Shah (Lalon Fakir), the mystic poet, philosopher, spiritual leader and social reformer. He died here on 17 October 1890 and was buried in the middle of his akhra, the dwelling place where he lived with his followers.
Every year on his death anniversary, thousands of disciples and admirers gather at the akhra for three days of Lalon's songs and discussion of his philosophy. Lalon lived within the Tagore family's zamindari in Kushtia.
