About Kantajew Temple

Kantajew Temple (Kantaji Mandir) at Kantanagar in Dinajpur is one of the finest examples of terracotta temple architecture in Bangladesh. Dedicated to Krishna and Rukmini, it was begun in 1704 by Maharaja Pran Nath and completed in 1752 under his son, Raja Ramnath.

The temple was built in the navaratna, nine-spired, style, but all nine spires fell in the earthquake of 1897. What makes it famous is the surface: its walls are richly covered in terracotta panels. The nearby Nayabad Mosque is said to have been built by the temple's own craftsmen.
