About Lawachara National Park

Lawachara National Park covers about 12.5 km² of hilly semi-evergreen and mixed forest in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar, about 8 km from Sreemangal town. It was declared a national park in 1996 and lies within the larger West Bhanugach Reserved Forest. The low hillocks, called tila, are crossed by sandy-bedded streams, one of which, the Lawachara, gives the park its name.

The park is best known for the western hoolock gibbon, an endangered ape; the group here is the largest surviving gibbon population in Bangladesh. Studies have recorded around 460 species in the park, including about 246 kinds of birds and 20 mammals.
