Maulvibazar district guideRows of tea estates across rolling hillocks. It is in Maulvibazar district, Sylhet Division.
Sreemangal, an upazila in Moulvibazar district, is often called the tea capital of Bangladesh. Neatly clipped tea gardens cover its low hills, and the area also grows rubber, pineapple, lemon and betel. It borders Habiganj to the west and the Indian state of Tripura to the south.
The town makes a good base for nature trips: Lawachara National Park is about 8 km away, and Baikka Beel and Madhabpur Lake are known for their birds. Several Indigenous communities live in and around the tea estates, including Santal, Khasi, Garo and Manipuri people. The name is said to come from two brothers, Sri Das and Mangal Das, who settled by the Hail Haor.
