Rangamati district guideA large man-made reservoir surrounded by hills. It is in Rangamati district, Chattogram Division.
Kaptai Lake is the largest man-made lake in Bangladesh, spreading through the hills of Rangamati district. It was formed when the Kaptai Dam was built across the Karnaphuli River for a hydro-electric plant; work began in 1956 and finished in 1961. The lake averages about 30 m deep and reaches over 50 m in places.
The reservoir came at a heavy cost: around 220 km² of farmland went under water, about 100,000 people were displaced, and the old palace of the Chakma king was submerged. Today the lake's branching arms, islands and hills make Rangamati one of the country's best-known boat-trip destinations.
