About Idrakpur Fort

Idrakpur Fort in Munshiganj town is a Mughal river fort built around 1660, which many historians credit to Mir Jumla II, governor of Bengal under Aurangzeb. It was meant to secure Mughal control of Munshiganj and to protect Dhaka and Narayanganj from the pirates who attacked along the rivers.

Together with Hajiganj and Sonakanda forts in Narayanganj, it formed a triangle of defences guarding the river route to Dhaka. Mir Jumla had been sent to Bengal for his naval skill after the war of succession among Shah Jahan's sons, in which Bengal's governor Shah Shuja was defeated.
