Narayanganj district guideA street of old merchant houses in Sonargaon, once a medieval capital of Bengal. It is in Narayanganj district, Dhaka Division.
Panam Nagar in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, is an abandoned merchants' town of 52 old buildings lining a single narrow street about 600 m long, with canals on both sides. The settlement dates back to the 13th century and declined after the capital moved away from Sonargaon; in the 19th century wealthy Hindu cotton-cloth traders rebuilt it with the two- and three-storey houses seen today.
The buildings mix Mughal details, such as cusped arches and ogee windows, with British colonial façades. Most residents left after Partition and the 1964 riots, and the street was later declared an archaeological site, with restoration under way.
