Narayanganj district guideA Mughal-era river fort on the Shitalakshya in Narayanganj. It is in Narayanganj district, Dhaka Division.
Sonakanda Fort is a Mughal river fort on the east bank of the Shitalakshya in Narayanganj. Its exact date is unknown, but historians credit it to Mir Jumla II, governor of Bengal from 1660, and place its construction around 1660–63. It was one of three river forts, with Hajiganj and Idrakpur, built to guard Dhaka from the pirates who raided Bengal's rivers.
The fort has two parts: a massive defensive wall about 3 m high, thicker at the base and pierced with loopholes for guns, and a large raised platform for artillery, entered through a gateway on the north.
