Bagerhat district guideA principal monument of the historic Mosque City of Bagerhat. It is in Bagerhat district, Khulna Division.
The Sixty Dome Mosque (Shat Gombuj Masjid) near Bagerhat town is the largest mosque in Bangladesh from the Bengal Sultanate period and part of the UNESCO-listed Mosque City of Bagerhat. It was built between about 1442 and 1459 by Khan Jahan Ali, who founded the city of Khalifatabad here, and it served as a prayer hall, madrasa and assembly hall.
Despite its name, the mosque has 81 domes, 77 over the prayer hall plus one on each corner tower, held up by 60 slender stone pillars; the name may first have meant "sixty pillars". Its thick, tapering brick walls and fortress-like corner towers recall the Tughlaq architecture of Delhi. Khan Jahan Ali's tomb and several other mosques of the old city are a short ride away.
