Kherua Mosque

A historic mosque in Sherpur upazila of Bogura. It is in Bogura district, Rajshahi Division.

About Kherua Mosque

Kherua Mosque in Sherpur upazila of Bogura dates from the early Mughal period. An inscription on its front wall records that it was built in 1582 by Mirza Murad Khan Qaqshal, son of Jauhar Ali Khan Qaqshal, who was probably a local jagirdar or faujdar when Sherpur was an administrative centre under Ghoraghat.

The origin of the name Kherua is unclear; one idea links it to the Persian khair gah, "within a place", if the mosque once stood inside a fort that Raja Man Singh built at Sherpur, which no longer exists. The mosque was repaired in 1956, is still used for daily prayers, and the Department of Archaeology has built a boundary wall around it.
