Bhawal National Park lies in Gazipur, about 40 km north of Dhaka. It was set up in 1974 and formally declared in 1982; its core covers 940 hectares within about 5,000 hectares of surrounding forest. The land was once part of the Madhupur forest under the Bhawal Estate.
The forest is mainly sal, much of it coppice regrowth, and around 345 plant species have been recorded, including 151 kinds of trees. Tigers, leopards, elephants and peacocks once lived here, but most of that wildlife has gone and much of the original forest has been cleared, with new trees planted since.
