About Natore Rajbari

Natore Rajbari, also known as Pagla Raja's Palace, was the seat of the Rajshahi Raj, one of the largest zamindari estates of Bengal. The family rose in the early 18th century when Raghunandan Moitra became minister to Nawab Murshid Quli Khan and his elder brother Ramjivan acquired confiscated estates, took the title of Raja and made Natore his headquarters.

Ramjivan built the first palace, surrounded by two moats that still survive; after the estate was divided, a second palace was built for the junior branch. The estate is most associated with Rani Bhabani, who expanded both the lands and the palace after her husband's death. Many of the original buildings fell in the 1897 earthquake and were rebuilt or replaced.
