Uttara Gonobhaban, the "Northern People's House", near Natore town was built from 1734 as the palace of the Dighapatia Raj and is also known as Dighapatia Rajbari. The family's founder, Dayaram Roy, was a minister of Rani Bhabani and was rewarded by the Nawab of Bengal with large estates; the palace was developed further in the 19th century.
The gate tower has a large clock imported from Italy, with a bell and clock room, and the gardens are planted with foreign trees and Italian marble statues. Today it is the official residence of the head of government in the north of Bangladesh and has been used to receive foreign ambassadors.
